FRONTIERS, FRONTIERS,…
Wherever you look, at life itself, at art, science, feelings, sex, religion, television, the Internet, you are ever faced with the question of frontiers, boundaries, borders.
When I was a child, this seemed to be a simple issue. There were “natural” frontiers and boundaries and “artificial” ones. In order to cross the former you needed to take a plane or a boat. To deal with the latter you needed “papers”. Those frontiers were unchanging - or so they seemed to me.
Later, I learnt to choose between “line” and “colour”, between Poussin and Rubens. It was a conscious choice - the Impressionists, the Nabis, Bauhaus, the Futurists, Kandinsky, Klee, Soulages, Hartung...Then, back to the starting points, new departures, new borders…
Later still, I witnessed the end of the “finite” world as we knew it. I witnessed the falling down of the Wall! I saw new wars taking place. Now a new Wall is going up, others are falling down. We’re witnesses to an enlargement. But how many Europes will that bring?
What is real? And what’s unreal?
Do frontiers, boundaries, borders only exist in our imagination?
And how can one represent them?
How can one paint them? How can one represent in painting their consistence, their sensuality, their lyricism, as, say, in the Odyssey revisited by James Joyce? Their underlying anxiety as in the works of Roger Ikor? Their greater violence as in those of Kusturica or as courageously filmed by Michael Moore?
How can one paint the intimacy of the in-between?
The paintings before you should be accepted as the result of much mulling on the subject, as the representation of an obsessive issue and as an esthetic choice to paint the intangible, compelling yet real. Boundaries, separation, constraints, bonds.... These are all springboards for the imagination to proclaim and denounce and make its own.
